Our Proud
history
Our story began in 1858, during Victoria’s gold rush. Previously quiet regional centers saw a sudden influx of miners; towns such as Ballarat were awash with men with a thirst for good fortune, and for good ale. However, brewers struggled with inconsistent malt supplies from distant shores. Determined to provide a superior local alternative, Alexander White, who was a trained maltster, joined forces with Henry Cane.
At just 23, Joe White followed his father’s footsteps and took over the reins of the business. He thrived as a leader, and two years later, a new malthouse stood proudly on Gregory Street in Ballarat, laying the foundation for a legacy of excellence.
The company’s first roaster was installed in Collingwood and the Joe White Maltsters have not looked back since, remaining at the forefront of manufacturing high-quality specialty malts.
A new, state of the art Barth roaster was installed in Ballarat, the spiritual home of Joe White Maltings, making it the Specialty Malting Plant.
The second Barth roaster was installed, making Ballarat the largest specialty malt plant in the Southern Hemisphere.
Joe White Maltings operate malting plants in all major barley growing regions in Australia, serving modern brewers and distillers as they craft the next generation of great beers and spirits.
